Is it better to pay taxis in Pakistan with cash, or do drivers accept cards or payment apps?

Pakistan’s taxi culture still runs on cash. Even though Uber and Careem are common in Lahore and Karachi, most drivers like cash payments since they get the money instantly. Traditional taxis and rickshaws don’t accept cards at all. If you’re traveling around, especially to smaller towns, you’ll need rupees in small denominations because change is always an issue. Apps can be handy for booking, but in practice, cash dominates. Don’t expect reliable card transactions for taxis here.

My experience in Pakistan was mixed. When I used Careem in Islamabad, I could pay by card through the app, but half the time the drivers asked me to switch to cash because they preferred it. On the street, it’s always rupees in hand, no card machines anywhere. I recommend downloading Careem, but don’t assume electronic payments will go smoothly. Definitely withdraw enough cash when you arrive, because taxis are simply not card-ready unless you’re strictly app-based in big cities.

When I visited Pakistan, I realized quickly that taxis are cash-driven. Even when using Careem, some drivers canceled the card option after pickup and requested cash instead. It’s not really about the technology but the convenience for them. On the streets, forget about cards-it’s rupees only. If you’re flying in, make sure to withdraw cash at the airport, because outside the major cities, finding working ATMs can be tricky. Cash is the reality for most rides in Pakistan.

In Pakistan, cash is what you’ll need for taxis. The traditional yellow or private cabs you see in cities like Karachi or Lahore don’t have card readers. Apps like Careem and Uber do exist in big cities, and if you link your card, you can pay digitally, but even then many drivers ask for cash. I carried small notes of Pakistani rupees and it made things much easier. Outside the big cities, cards are useless for transport, cash only.
