I need to take out quite a bit of cash during my trip. Anyone know cheapest ATMs & daily withdrawal limits for foreign cards at Mongolia ATMs?
During my Mongolia trip, I mostly used Khan Bank and Golomt Bank ATMs. My Wise Visa worked fine with MNT 400,000 limits and a MNT 5,000 fee. Revolut Mastercard also worked well with Khan Bank. I withdrew daily since Mongolia is very cash-heavy, especially in markets, restaurants, and rural towns. ATMs were modern and safe in Ulaanbaatar but almost non-existent outside the city. Planning ahead with withdrawals made my trip much easier.
Mongolian ATMs have low limits and high fees. My HSBC debit card was capped at MNT 300,000 at TDB, and the fee was MNT 6,000. Machines in smaller towns often ran out of cash or didn’t accept foreign cards. You’ll need to withdraw often, which increases costs. Best advice: withdraw as much as possible in Ulaanbaatar at Khan or Golomt Bank, and carry plenty of cash when traveling outside the capital.
I had a good experience withdrawing in Mongolia. My Monzo Mastercard worked fine at Khan Bank in Ulaanbaatar, where I withdrew MNT 500,000 in one go for a MNT 5,000 fee. Golomt Bank also worked with my Revolut Visa without problems. I usually withdrew every two days to cover food, taxis, and tours since Mongolia is very cash-based. ATMs had English menus and were easy to use. Overall, Khan Bank felt like the best choice for foreign travellers.
In Mongolia, the best ATMs for foreign cards are Golomt Bank, Khan Bank, and Trade & Development Bank (TDB). I used my Wise Visa at Golomt Bank in Ulaanbaatar, with a withdrawal limit of MNT 400,000 (~$120 USD) and a MNT 5,000 fee. Khan Bank ATMs allowed MNT 500,000 with my Revolut Mastercard. TDB also worked with my Monzo Visa but sometimes limited me to MNT 300,000. ATMs are mainly in Ulaanbaatar, with very few in rural areas.
