ATM fees and limits in Macau?

On my Macau trip, I withdrew cash mainly at ICBC ATMs near Senado Square. My Wise Mastercard worked perfectly with a 3000 MOP limit, and the fee was 20 MOP. BNU ATMs also worked fine with my HSBC debit, with limits around 2500-3000 MOP. I usually withdrew enough to cover taxis, local restaurants, and a bit of shopping, while most of my bigger expenses went on card. ATMs were easy to find, but smaller banks often rejected my card, so I stuck with ICBC and BNU.

Not every ATM in Macau is good for foreign cards. I had multiple declines at Tai Fung Bank with my Chase debit, and when it worked, the limit was just 2000 MOP. Some ATMs like BNU Bank, China Construction Bank, Bank of China OCBC had no fees. Some ATMs did try to convert into HKD with a bad exchange rate, so you need to be careful to pick MOP. BNU and ICBC were the only reliable banks for me. I’d recommend withdrawing larger amounts once instead of multiple small withdrawals.

I had a smooth experience in Macau withdrawing cash. BNU ATMs at Venetian Macau accepted my Revolut Visa with no issue, and I could withdraw 5000 MOP in one go. No fees at all. ICBC and Bank of China ATMs also worked fine with my Monzo card - both with 5000 or 10,000 limit depending on where the ATM was located. Since most casinos and hotels take international credit cards, I barely used cash, but it was handy for taxis and small local cafés. Overall, Macau was much easier than I expected for ATM access.

In Macau, Banco Nacional Ultramarino (BNU) and ICBC ATMs are the most foreign-card-friendly. I used my HSBC debit card at BNU in Senado Square, and the limit was 3000 MOP (~$370 USD) per withdrawal. ICBC did have a fee of 20 MOP but BNU was free. I used Bank of China ATM also once - 5000 and no fee. Tai Fung Bank ATMs also worked with my Wise card, allowing 5000 MOP withdrawals. Some ATMs will offer conversion into HKD or USD - always choose MOP to get the best rate. Machines are plentiful around casinos and shopping areas.
