In planning mode - how much budget should I keep in mind for Mozambique - any experiences?
I stayed in Tofo and Maputo and saw different price levels. Local stews with rice were $4-5, but seafood on the beach was $15. Chapas between towns were $2, while private taxis in Maputo cost $10. Tips were 10%. My daily spend was $45, though diving trips doubled that. Mozambique is affordable for meals and buses, but tourist zones like Tofo or Vilankulo raise prices. For planning, $40-50 daily works, but add more for island or ocean activities.
Meals: $3-6 local, $12-18 restaurants. Transport: $1 chapas, $10 taxis. Tips: 10%. Safe daily budget: $40-45 for meals, local transport, and tips. Add $20-30 for tours or diving. Mozambique is affordable, but activities and island travel raise the spend. For a month-long stay, $1,400-1,500 covers basics comfortably, excluding extras.
I averaged $55 daily in Mozambique. Dinners in Maputo were $12-15, while beachside seafood in Tofo was $18-20. Transport varied - chapas were cheap, but private taxis $5-10. Tips were 10%. At this budget, I had comfortable meals, regular taxis, and a few activities. Diving was expensive at $60-80, so I kept those separate. For meals, rides, and tips, $50-60 is safe. Mozambique isn’t ultra-cheap, but seafood quality makes it worth it.
Mozambique is affordable but distances raise costs. Local meals like matapa or rice with chicken are $3-4, while seafood on the coast is $8-10. Chapas (minibuses) are $1-3, but long-distance buses are $10-15. Tips are small, around 10%. Backpackers can live on $25-30 daily, eating local and using chapas. Island trips like ferries to Ilha de Moçambique or diving in Tofo cost more, so save extra for those days. Normal meals and tips are cheap.
