Just landed - wondering what gives the better rate in Somalia: ATM withdrawal or airport exchange counter?

Somalia's airport exchange rates are always worse than ATM rates, but sometimes you gotta use the desk if the machine is empty. Whenever possible, I pulled cash at Salaam Somali Bank ATMs in town. Way better rate than the exchange guys at arrivals, just watch those bank fees.

I found the ATMs in Somalia, especially at Dahabshiil in the city, offer better value than whatever the airport counter posts. Just make sure your foreign card actually works - sometimes the networks are down or cash runs low. For quick taxi fare, airport desks are fine but not for anything more.

In my experience, airport exchange in Somalia is quick for a small amount if you need it, but the rate is never as good as using a top bank ATM. Salaam Somali Bank in Hargeisa got me closer to market rate even after fees. Airport rates felt like a tourist trap, so go ATM if you can.

Just landed in Mogadishu and honestly, I got a better rate using Dahabshiil or Salaam Somali Bank ATMs than the airport exchange desk. The counter’s rate was pretty rough and they tacked on a service charge. The only downside with the ATM is occasional network issues, so it’s always smart to have backup cash on hand.
