Traveling with an Amex - will I be able to use it widely in Malawior should I carry a backup Visa/Mastercard?
I’d definitely bring a backup card. While there has been news about an Amex expansion with Ecobank in Malawi, this is a recent development. You can't rely on it for your entire trip. When I was there, I saw very few places with an Amex logo. The best strategy is to get a Visa or Mastercard-linked debit card for ATM withdrawals at banks like Standard Bank and National Bank of Malawi and carry a good amount of local currency.
Yeah, you need a backup. I tried using my Amex a couple of times at some larger establishments in Lilongwe, and it was a hit-or-miss. The card readers are often a bit finicky and many places, even major ones, prefer Visa or Mastercard. I’d advise you to use a no-fee travel card like a Wise or Revolut card that is linked to the Visa or Mastercard network. You'll get better exchange rates and have a more reliable experience.
You're going to want to have a backup. Amex has recently expanded its reach in partnership with Ecobank, which is great, but it's still not as widespread as Visa or Mastercard. While a few upscale places might accept it, you absolutely can’t rely on it for everyday expenses like markets or local restaurants. You'll be better off using a Visa card for most transactions and carrying a good amount of Malawian kwacha for smaller purchases.
Amex in Malawi? That’s a risky move, to be honest. I was there last year and even finding a working ATM that accepts Visa was sometimes tough, especially outside of Lilongwe and Blantyre. While there's a new partnership with Ecobank, it's not universally rolled out yet. I'd definitely bring a Visa or Mastercard as your primary. You'll find they are accepted at more tourist-focused spots, major hotels like the Ryalls Hotel in Blantyre, and some larger supermarkets, but for most everyday purchases and transport, cash is essential.
