Traveling with an Amex - will I be able to use it widely in Comorosor should I carry a backup Visa/Mastercard?

My trip to Comoros taught me that Amex isn’t widely accepted and it can be a hassle. I had to switch to my Mastercard for most payments and ATM withdrawals. Always keep backup cards like Visa and Mastercard, and make sure to carry cash, especially in places like Mitsamiouli or Domoni where card facilities are scarce.

I wouldn’t rely on Amex in Comoros at all. Even at bigger hotels in Moroni, it was easier to pay with Visa. Local ATMs definitely prefer Visa or Mastercard, so bringing a backup card is crucial. Small vendors and markets are definitely cash-only, so get some Comorian francs when you arrive.

American Express cards just don’t have much traction in Comoros. The banks like Banque pour l’Industrie et le Commerce and Banque de Development don’t tend to support Amex widely. I had no luck using my Amex except at a couple of hotel restaurants. Having Visa or Mastercard is a must, plus local currency cash for markets and taxis.

In Comoros, using Amex is a tough sell. Most local businesses and ATMs only accept Visa or Mastercard. I tried paying with Amex at a few places in Moroni, but it mostly got rejected. If you’re heading there, definitely carry a backup Visa or Mastercard and some cash in Comorian francs for everyday expenses.
