American Express is basically useless in Sudan’s current economy. Even Visa and Mastercard only have limited acceptance, mostly in big city hotels and banks like Bank of Khartoum. Outside that, you’ll need lots of cash. ATMs aren’t easy to find in smaller towns, so prepare accordingly.

When I traveled to Khartoum, I found Visa the most useful card. Amex wasn’t accepted anywhere I tried, except maybe luxury hotels. Many ATMs I used only supported Visa or Mastercard. Cash was needed for street food and local markets, so a mix of cash and Visa card worked best.

If you plan to visit Sudan, bring a Visa or Mastercard for ATM withdrawals and payments at hotels and better restaurants. American Express won’t get you far, as acceptance is very limited. Cash in Sudanese pounds or US dollars is widely used, so always have enough in hand for small shops and markets where cards simply don’t work.

In Sudan, American Express is almost never accepted, especially outside major hotels and a few international businesses. Visa and Mastercard are more commonly accepted in Khartoum’s upscale restaurants and hotels, but many shops and local vendors only take cash. ATMs are available mostly in big cities and work best with Visa or Mastercard, so carrying those cards is definitely smarter than relying on Amex.
