Wondering if ATMs and places like restaurants shops in Somalia easily take American Express or its better to get a Visa or Mastercard
American Express is basically useless in Somalia. Even Visa or Mastercard can be hard to use regularly unless you’re at international hotels or NGOs. The local economy is very cash-dependent, and ATMs aren’t reliable. Carrying cash in Somali shillings or US dollars is the safest bet.
Last year in Somalia, I tried using Amex at a few hotels but was told they don’t take it. Visa worked better but still was limited to bigger establishments in Mogadishu like the Peace Hotel. Outside that, cash was the only thing that mattered. ATMs are scarce, so plan accordingly.
If traveling to Somalia, don’t rely on American Express at all. Visa and Mastercard have limited acceptance mainly in banks like Amal Bank and Dahabshiil branches in Mogadishu. Most places, including restaurants and markets, prefer cash payment. It’s wise to have multiple options but always carry Somali shillings or US dollars for smooth transactions.
In Somalia, especially in Mogadishu, most ATMs and shops don’t accept American Express. Visa and Mastercard are also not widely accepted outside major hotels or international businesses. Cash, especially in Somali shillings or US dollars, is still king. If you have to use cards, Visa or Mastercard may give you slightly more chances, but it’s best to carry enough cash for daily expenses.
