Is it better to pay taxis in Mauritania with cash, or do drivers accept cards or payment apps?
From my trip, taxis in Mauritania accept only cash. Even with Tigo or mobile money services around, taxis expect quick cash payments. Plan ahead and bring enough local currency so you’re not stuck.
Mauritania taxis do not take cards or mobile payments. Drivers often don’t have smartphones, so it’s simpler to have cash ready. I stayed near the Nouakchott market and always used cash for fares.
During my stay in Mauritania, taxis were cash-only. Even in hotels, they said card payments for taxis aren’t common. It’s best to withdraw enough cash at local banks or carry dollars, which are widely accepted.
In Nouakchott, it’s definitely cash all the way. I didn’t see any taxis accepting cards or apps. You want to carry enough Mauritanian ouguiya or USD, especially for longer rides. Drivers expect cash upfront, so don’t rely on digital payments here.
