Want to avoid last-minute ATM runs. Do most hostels in Liberia take card payments at check-in

My tip: avoid stressing about late ATM searches in Liberia. Hostels in Monrovia usually want cash, even when they list ‘card accepted’ online. Stock up LRD or USD at an Ecobank or Lonestar ATM as soon as you arrive (they’re in Mamba Point or downtown). That way, you’ll breeze through check-in, local transport, and food without chasing machines in the dark.

When I showed up at Papa’s Backpackers, I tried to swish my card-they just shook their head and said ‘cash only’. I wandered to Lonestar Bank nearby, got some USD, and came back to pay. After that moment, I just kept my cash stash for rooms, moto rides, and food stalls. No card dramas the rest of the trip-it was all good once I switched to notes.

My stay at Monrovia City Hostel was surprisingly chill. Even though they only took cash, the staff let me pop over to an Ecobank ATM across Broad Street, withdrew some LRD with my Visa, and sorted everything in less than five minutes. Having cash cleared things, and the vibe stayed relaxed after check-in. A great option if you don’t love ATM lines or faulty machines.

In central Monrovia, most budget guesthouses like Papa’s Backpackers or Monrovia City Hostel still prefer cash at check-in, even though there are a few mid-range places with POS machines. ATMs (like Ecobank near Ocean View or Lonestar) take Visa but not all guests trust late-night ATM runs. Best to bring enough Liberian dollars or US dollars to cover a couple nights and essentials-cash makes check-in smoother and quicker.
