The general rule in Sudan: carry cash for buses and taxis. I used cash when commuting in Khartoum, and metro lines haven’t fully launched for widespread use. No option for card payments yet, so withdrawing monitory at banks like Banque of Khartoum before travel is best.

Cash is king on Sudan’s public transport. I used buses and taxis in Khartoum and Omdurman, and paying by card is unheard of. The planned metro systems are in beta stages and likely won’t accept cards right away. Always keep small change of Sudanese pounds ready to make fares easier.

Using buses in Sudan means carrying cash for sure. Even in larger cities like Omdurman or Khartoum, I had to pay drivers in cash, no exceptions. The Khartoum metro is still developing, but it’s expected that initially you’ll use preloaded cards or cash, no direct card payments on boarding.

In Sudan, public buses and minibuses are cash-only, especially in Khartoum. I never saw card readers on any buses or shared taxis. The newer metro lines in Khartoum are still limited but expected to use prepaid cards or cash initially. So small Sudanese pounds in cash are a must for everyday travel.
