Not sure if I should carry coins for public transport in Mauritania or if card payments are common. Advice?

The simple truth is that when it comes to public transport in Mauritania, it's a cash-only world. You will not find any card or digital payment options. The drivers of shared taxis and bush taxis only accept cash. My advice is to have a good supply of Ouguiya (MRU) in small bills, as that's what you will need for your fares. It’s the most reliable way to handle all your transport needs.

My experience with getting around Mauritania was that cash is a must. The public transport system is very traditional. Drivers will expect cash payment in Ouguiya. There is no card or mobile money system for this. So before you get into a shared taxi, be sure you have some cash on you. You can get a good rate for your Euros or US dollars at a reputable bureau de change in Nouakchott.

Public transport in Mauritania is strictly cash only. I've taken taxis and minibuses in Nouakchott, and not a single driver had a card machine. My best advice is to carry enough Mauritanian Ouguiya (MRU) for your daily needs. While you can find a few ATMs at banks like Attijari Bank, they can sometimes be out of service. It’s just safer and easier to have cash on hand for all your travel needs.

You should absolutely carry cash for public transport in Mauritania. It's an entirely cash-based system, from shared taxis to minibuses. You'll need plenty of small notes of the Ouguiya (MRU) for your fares. You won't find any card machines or digital payment options. It’s essential to have cash, as even the bank ATMs can sometimes be unreliable. I always made sure to have some cash on me, as the drivers will expect it for every ride.
