Wondering how to pay for metro and bus rides in Liberia - cash only, or do cards work too?

Liberia’s public transport is still very much cash-based, which can be a bummer if you prefer paying by card. Even with new buses from the NTA, fares are paid in Liberian dollars directly to drivers. ATMs are around Monrovia, but it’s a hassle outside big cities. The system could definitely use upgrading to tap cards or mobile payment options to make travel smoother.

If you’re in Liberia, definitely keep cash handy for bus or taxi rides. While some taxis accept mobile money apps, buses are strictly cash-only as of 2025. The National Transit Authority is slowly adding more buses, but no card payments onboard. ATMs from banks like Ecobank and GT Bank in Monrovia are your best bet to stock up on Liberian dollars before heading out.

Traveling around Liberia’s cities mostly means paying for buses and shared taxis in cash. The National Transit Authority (NTA) runs some buses, but fares are still collected in Liberian dollars at the point of boarding. Credit or debit cards aren’t accepted on local public transport yet. ATMs can be found in Monrovia at banks like Liberian Bank for Development and Investment, so it’s smart to withdraw cash ahead of your trip to avoid any hassles.
