Wondering how to pay for metro and bus rides in Comoros - cash only, or do cards work too?

When you're travelling around Comoros, especially on shared taxis, it's all about cash. You'll hear prices quoted in Comorian francs (KMF) or sometimes euros, but you'll need KMF to pay for your transport. The fares are very low, so you won't be handing over large amounts of money, but having small denominations is key. There's no metro, and the minibuses and taxis have no electronic payment options. So, before you get on a shared taxi to a place like Itsandra or Iconi, make sure your wallet is full of Comorian francs.

Your best bet for paying for bus and taxi rides in Comoros is to carry a good amount of local cash, the Comorian Franc (KMF). I tried to use my card at an ATM in Moroni from Banque Fédérale des Commerce (BFC), but it was a bit unreliable, so don't count on it. The shared taxis and minibuses are the main way to travel, and the drivers only take cash. For example, a shared taxi from the city to the outskirts might cost 350-500 KMF. Don't be that tourist trying to pay with a Mastercard; it just won't work.

Forget about using your credit card for public transport in Comoros-it's a cash-only situation. The public transportation network is mainly shared taxis and minibuses, which don't have any card-reading machines. The Comorian Franc (KMF) is the currency you'll need. It's a good idea to always have small bills and coins on you for bus and taxi fares. I remember getting a shared taxi from the airport to downtown Moroni and the fare was around 500 KMF per person, paid in cash. Don't expect to use a Revolut or Wise card for this.

I can tell you from experience that in Comoros, you should rely on cash. There isn't a metro system, so you'll be using shared taxis or minibusses to get around, and none of them accept cards. Fares for a shared taxi around Moroni are usually very affordable, like 300 KMF. For longer trips between towns, it might be around 1,000 KMF. You pay the driver directly with Comorian francs. While some major hotels in Moroni might accept Visa, you'll find that for day-to-day transport, cash is the only way to go.
