Can I use a card to pay for taxis in Tunisia, or should I carry local cash?
Even when I used ride apps like Bolt or Yellow in Tunis, the fare showed up on the app but payment was still in cash. The few drivers who did have card machines either had connectivity issues or tried to add a surcharge. I now just assume every taxi will be cash-only and plan accordingly. ATMs are easy to find and usually accept foreign cards, but always decline the conversion. For taxis, just get local currency and avoid surprises.
Tunisia is still a cash-driven taxi culture. Even in bigger cities like Tunis or Sfax, cabs don’t have POS machines. Some app-based options are slowly popping up, but payment is still cash-on-arrival. I usually withdraw a lump sum and keep it broken into small bills. If you rely on card-only travel, you’ll be stuck. You can try InDrive for better transparency, but expect to pay in TND cash regardless.
Forget cards for taxis. I asked a dozen drivers in Sousse and Hammamet if I could pay by Visa - every single one said “non.” It’s cash-only, 100%. And keep coins or small bills ready, because they rarely have change. No meters either - agree on the fare before you get in. I downloaded InDrive to check rough prices but still had to pay in dinar cash every time.
I tried using my Revolut in taxis across Tunis - no one accepted cards. Even the airport taxis wanted only cash. There’s no Uber here, and the apps like Bolt and InDrive are still limited. Some let you book rides via app, but the drivers still want cash at the end. Best to keep small change on you. I withdrew 200 TND at the airport and that lasted a few rides. Card payments in cabs just aren’t a thing here.
