Travelling soon and looking for best ATMs in Mauritius that work well with foreign debit/credit cards and dont charge crazy fees. Any recos will be highly appreciated.
ATM fees in Mauritius do add up. My HSBC debit was charged 200 MUR at a Barclays ATM in Flic-en-Flac for a MUR 10,000 withdrawal. Some ATMs also rejected my Mastercard, especially in smaller towns. Machines often gave out large bills, which were hard to use in markets or buses. Best advice: stick with MCB or SBM, withdraw larger amounts to minimize fees, and break your notes at supermarkets or petrol stations. Cash is still important outside tourist resorts.
Mauritius was fairly easy for ATMs. My Monzo Mastercard worked fine at MCB in Grand Baie, allowing me to withdraw MUR 10,000 in one go with a 150 MUR fee. SBM ATMs in Port Louis also worked with my Revolut Visa. I only withdrew twice during my trip, enough to cover taxis, food, and local shops, since hotels and restaurants took cards. Overall, the ATM network in Mauritius was reliable, and I found MCB to be the best choice for foreign travellers.
In Mauritius, the top banks for ATM withdrawals are MCB (Mauritius Commercial Bank), SBM (State Bank of Mauritius), and Barclays. I used my Wise Visa at MCB in Port Louis, with a withdrawal limit of MUR 10,000 (~$215 USD) and a fee of 150 MUR. SBM ATMs worked with my Revolut Mastercard, offering the same limit. Barclays had slightly higher fees at 200 MUR. ATMs are widely available in towns, but less common in smaller villages, so withdraw in advance.
SBM ATM located in the baggage claim area at Mauritius airport. Accepted my Mastercard debit card. Charged me a fee.
