I used my US card in Djibouti & the ATM just asked me Accept or Decline Conversion - I feel like I should choose Accept coz it seems more appealing but it had these super confusing numbers on the screen saying 8% markup so not sure. What should I do?

Declining is a must in Djibouti’s ATMs. That 8% fee means you’re paying way more than needed. Use Visa or Mastercard linked cards that offer fair exchange rates. I had no issues withdrawing from Dahabshil Bank ATMs.

If you accept the conversion in Djibouti, you’re giving them an easy chance to charge that 8% fee. I always decline and let my card do the currency bump. Also, check with your bank regarding ATM withdrawal limits before you travel.

DJibouti’s ATMs can get tricky with that conversion option. Declining saves you money even if it looks sketchy. Use your US card with a no-forex fee bank if possible. Bank of Africa machines were reliable during my trip.

I faced the same ‘Accept or Decline’ deal in Djibouti, and I always decline. The 8% markup is a big no-no. Card networks have better rates. I used Bank of Djibouti ATMs often and stayed away from the conversion trap to avoid overpaying.
