Looking for reliable ATMs in Ghana that work well with foreign debit/credit cards and dont charge crazy fees. Any recos will be highly appreciated.
On my Ghana trip, I withdrew mostly from CBG ATMs in Accra and Kumasi. They worked fine with my Mastercard debit, with limits around 10,000 GHS per withdrawal and 25 cedi fee. GCB Bank also worked well with my Wise Visa, with limits around 10000 GHS with 30 cedi fee. I budgeted about 300 GHS a day for food, transport, and accommodation, so one withdrawal every few days was enough. Cash is still king in Ghana, especially in markets and taxis, so plan your withdrawals in advance.
Ghana can be tricky for ATMs if you’re relying only on foreign cards. Some ATMs ran out of cash, especially outside of Accra, and my Revolut card was rejected multiple times at GCB Bank. I tried a bunch of atms and found these fees:
Zenith bank: 20 cedi
Absa bank: 25.99 cedi
Soc Gen: 50 cedi
Fidelity bank: 30 cedi
UBA - 0
Republic bank - 0
Puridential - 60 cedo
Limits were standard at 10,000 GHS. My tip is to withdraw in the capital and avoid doing it in smaller towns, where machines are less reliable. Carry backup USD cash if possible.
I had a good experience withdrawing cash in Ghana. NIB ATMs in Accra Mall worked with my Wise card without any problems. Fee was 20 cedi and limit was 10,000 GHS per transaction, which isn’t terrible compared to airport exchanges. Calbank charged me 30 cedi and CBG 25 cedi so was ok for my Monzo card, and I was able to take out 10,000 GHS again, which lasted several days of hotels, food, and taxis. Ghana is still very cash-based, so I recommend always carrying at least 200-300 GHS for smaller purchases.
In Ghana, the most reliable ATMs for foreign cards are Standard Chartered Bank, Absa Bank, NIB, Ecobank, and Stanbic Bank. I used my Visa debit card from HSBC at a Standard Chartered ATM in Accra, and it allowed me to withdraw up to 2000 GHS (~$150 USD) per transaction with a fee of about 25 GHS. All have fees of 20-30 cedi. Smaller local banks often reject foreign cards, so best to stick to the international names.
