The ATM just swallowed my debit card and didnt return it. This was in Benin, close to where Im staying. Any idea if local banks can help? Help SOS how to get it back

This is a frustrating situation, and I've been there. My advice is to immediately contact your bank's international support team. It's highly unlikely that you will get the card back in Benin due to the security policies of local banks like Ecobank, which often destroy foreign cards that are retained. Trying to get it back is often a long and ultimately fruitless process. Your best course of action is to have your bank cancel the card and then arrange for a new one to be sent to a trusted address.

What a pain! I've heard this is a common issue with older ATMs. I was in Benin for a few weeks and mainly used my Revolut card, which worked fine at Ecobank ATMs, but I always had a cash backup. The local banks might be able to help you if it's their machine, but be prepared for a slow process. Honestly, your best bet is to assume the card is gone. The fastest solution is always to block it remotely via your bank’s app and then order a new one.

Yeah, classic ATM problem. Happened to my buddy near Dantokpa market with his Capital One Visa. Local banks in Benin usually have a policy of destroying foreign cards that get swallowed to prevent fraud. They don't have the protocol to verify and return them to an international tourist. Your best and fastest option is to freeze the card through your banking app immediately, then call your bank's international support number. You'll need to arrange for a new card to be sent to you. Don't waste too much time trying to retrieve it; it's a long shot.

Hey, that's a tough spot to be in, but don't panic. I had a similar thing happen to me in Cotonou last year with a Credit Suisse card. First, immediately call your bank and report the card lost or stolen. Most banks will advise you to cancel it right away. Unfortunately, it's very unlikely you'll get the physical card back from a Beninese bank, especially as a foreigner. The best bet is to go to the bank that operates the ATM-Ecobank is a big one there-and explain your situation. They can sometimes help, but be prepared to just get a new card sent from your home bank.
