Not sure if I should carry coins for public transport in Philippines or if card payments are common. Advice?

Just finished a month in the Philippines and while the Beep card system is getting better in cities, it’s still a mostly cash-based country for local transport. The LRT in Manila accepts Beep cards or coins at machines, but the older buses and minibuses are cash-only. If you're heading to places like El Nido or Dumaguete, expect to pay in cash. No one accepts Wise, Revolut, or even GCash unless you’re using a Grab car. Carry coins they’re still essential.

Used public transport across Metro Manila and Davao in April and the Beep card was a lifesaver in the cities. It worked on the MRT, EDSA buses, and even at some convenience stores. But anywhere outside of that especially jeepneys, habal-habals, and provincial buses, cash is 100% necessary. Tricycle drivers in Siargao actually laughed when I asked about card payment. Coins make life easier, especially for short rides that cost 9 or 12 pesos.

Traveled around Cebu and Bohol last month and almost everything transport-wise was cash only. Jeepneys, tricycles, ferries, they all asked for exact cash. Some places accepted 20s or 50s, but anything larger made it awkward. No card payment options at all except for some tourist shuttle services. I kept a stash of 1, 5, and 10 peso coins just for getting around. Definitely recommend withdrawing a mix of bills and coins when you arrive.

I was in Manila in May and used the MRT and LRT trains almost daily. You need either coins or small bills for single-journey tickets unless you have a Beep card. Most locals use the Beep card for trains, buses, and even some ferries  it's super convenient and can be topped up at 7-Eleven or stations. But for jeepneys, which are everywhere and super cheap, it’s always cash coins preferred. Drivers rarely have change for big bills.
