I used my US card in Thailand & the ATM just asked me Accept or Decline Conversion - I feel like I should choose Accept coz it seems more appealing but it had these super confusing numbers on the screen saying 8% markup so not sure. What should I do?
First time in Bangkok, used Krungsri Bank ATM and accepted the conversion because it seemed clearer - big mistake. Got charged a terrible rate and saw later it was about 9% above what I should’ve paid. On later withdrawals, I chose “Decline conversion,” and my ANZ card gave me a much fairer rate. Lesson learned: always get billed in Thai Baht, not AUD.
Siam Commercial Bank ATM gave me a choice to accept conversion at 36.4 THB per USD. Looked okay until I checked mid-market was around 33.5. That’s like an 8% cut! I chose “Decline,” and Natwest charged me in THB, which worked out to a much better rate. These DCC offers are so misleading. Always go local currency.

Used a Kasikorn Bank ATM in Chiang Mai. It offered to convert to GBP and warned me “if you decline, your bank might charge unknown fees” - total scare tactics! The DCC rate was showing a 7.9% markup. I declined, and when I checked my statement, I got a much better rate through Visa. Definitely decline.

Just got back from Thailand and hit up a Bangkok Bank ATM at the airport. It asked me if I wanted to accept their conversion to USD - seemed easier, but then I saw it had an 8.2% markup! Declined it, and Chase billed me in Thai Baht at the Visa rate with only a 1% foreign transaction fee. Saved like $12 on one withdrawal. Always decline the ATM’s rate - it’s a ripoff.
Used Kasikorn Bank in Thailand - worked with all cards but slapped on a 5.75% currency conversion fee. Not cheap.
Kasikorn Bank in Thailand charged a 5.75% conversion fee. ATM worked and accepted all major cards, but that charge adds up.
