Is it okay to use ATMs late in the evening in Vietnam or should I stick to daytime withdrawals only? I am a single woman travelling so want to be safe.
Its usually never a problem, i did not hear other friends facing any issue but i personally usually stuck to daytime ATM use during my trip through Vietnam. I had to make a late withdrawal once in Hue, near the Citadel. I went to an Agribank ATM inside a gas station that was still open and had a security guard nearby. Honestly, I felt safer knowing there were people around. General advice: if you're alone, avoid remote or dimly lit machines, skip generic hotel lobby ATMs, and opt for major bank machines in central areas. And if possible, do a small test withdrawal during the day to scope out where you feel comfortable returning if needed later.
When I traveled through Da Nang, I only withdrew cash after dark twice, both times near busy beachside areas like My Khe Beach. The ATMs there (I used MB Bank and VietinBank) were close to cafes and convenience stores still open, so it didn’t feel isolated. As a solo traveller, I preferred to plan my ATM runs during the day just to reduce stress. That said, if you have to do it in the evening, look for machines with CCTV, preferably inside glass-fronted bank lobbies that are lit and visible from the street. Is it okay to use ATMs late in the evening in Vietnam or should I stick to daytime withdrawals only? I’ve done late-night ATM withdrawals in Ho Chi Minh City around District 1, and it was generally fine but I always made sure to use ATMs attached to a bank branch like Techcombank or Sacombank and stayed on main roads like Le Lai or Nguyen Thai Hoc. One tip: try to go out early evening instead of really late, just for peace of mind. I use a Monzo card and keep it locked when not in use. Also, avoid ATMs in dark alleys or inside closed businesses even if they’re technically “available,” they’re not worth the risk late at night.
I was in Hanoi last month as a solo traveler and did a few late-evening ATM withdrawals near the Hoan Kiem Lake area. It felt quite safe as long as I stuck to well-lit, busy streets and used ATMs that were attached to actual bank branches like Vietcombank or BIDV. I avoided freestanding ATMs or ones inside convenience stores late at night. If you need cash after hours, I recommend using ATMs in 24/7 bank lobbies or large shopping centers like Lotte Mart or Aeon Mall. Also, I used my Wise card and kept the withdrawal amount low just in case anything went wrong.
TP Bank booth in Vietnam didnt have an ATM - only online banking available. Even though the booth exists and is in a safe area, you cant withdraw cash.
The BIDV ATM in Vietnam is now labeled differently than before - worked fine and was in a safe location.
I used the Agribank ATM in Vietnam worked perfectly, and the spot felt safe even at night.
