Is it okay to use ATMs late in the evening in Cambodia or should I stick to daytime withdrawals only? I am a single woman travelling so want to be safe.

I was in Cambodia solo for three weeks and made it a rule to only withdraw cash before sunset. Not because it’s super dangerous, but because I didn’t want to deal with the added stress. A friend of mine used a Maybank ATM at night in Phnom Penh and didn’t notice someone looking over his shoulder nothing happened but it left him shaken. If you have a good travel card like Monzo or Wise, you can do one or two bigger withdrawals during the day and avoid nighttime cash runs altogether. That worked really well for me.

In Kampot last year I needed cash late one night and used an ACLEDA ATM outside a petrol station. The machine worked fine but the area was dark and there were no people around. It felt sketchy even though nothing went wrong. After that, I made sure to plan my withdrawals during daylight. Most towns have enough bank branches where you can get money out safely between 8 AM and 5 PM. It’s just not worth the risk late at night, especially if you’re alone.

Used ATMs at all hours in Siem Reap during my two-week solo trip. Personally never had a problem, but I was careful to only use ones attached to big banks or inside supermarket lobbies with cameras and guards. The one time I tried using a street-side ATM after dinner, a group of kids came too close and it made me really uncomfortable. Nothing happened but it reminded me not to get too relaxed. I’d say evening is okay if you're in a busy area like Pub Street, but definitely trust your instincts and avoid empty corners.

I’ve been living in Phnom Penh for the past six months and I’d say stick to daytime ATM use whenever possible. Some areas are well lit and fine, like around BKK1 or near major hotels, but there are still occasional reports of bag snatching at night, especially if you’re distracted at a machine. I’d recommend using an ATM inside a bank lobby during office hours. ABA and Canadia Bank have branches with security guards and indoor ATMs that feel much safer. Avoid standalone machines on quiet streets after dark.
