Is it safe to withdraw cash in Guyana or not?
ATMs that accept foreign cards are mostly in major banks. I used one inside a hotel lobby late one evening - that felt safe. But generally, withdrawing money after dark in Guyana isn’t advisable unless you’re in a controlled environment.
Tried to use an ATM in New Amsterdam after 8 PM - either offline or out of cash. Locals said that’s common. Machines are fewer outside Georgetown, and it's best to sort your withdrawals before sunset, especially if you’re on the road.
While staying near the seawall, I asked my host about ATM use at night. They strongly recommended against it. Even in the city, petty crime isn’t rare. I withdrew money during the day and didn’t look for machines after dark at all.
In Georgetown, I withdrew cash from a Republic Bank ATM near Camp Street just after 9 PM. The area had decent lighting and was moderately busy. ATM safety at night in Guyana felt okay there, but I wouldn’t risk using machines in quieter neighborhoods. Locals were friendly, but caution matters.
