The ATM just swallowed my debit card and didnt return it. This was in Chile, close to where Im staying. Any idea if local banks can help? Help SOS how to get it back
I had my Revolut Mastercard taken by a BancoEstado ATM in Puerto Varas late at night. By the next business day, the staff told me the card had already been destroyed. I had to cancel it and use my Monzo backup. Chile still needs cash for colectivos, small cafés, and some hostels, so it made things harder. Always withdraw during banking hours and keep both a second card and some Chilean pesos handy.
My Wise Visa was swallowed by a Santander ATM in Santiago. I went to the branch the next morning, and the staff returned it after verifying my passport. They explained it was a connection issue. A friend had a similar smooth recovery with Banco de Chile in Valparaíso. As long as you use ATMs attached to branches, you have a good chance of recovery in Chile.
Lost my card at a BancoEstado ATM in Santiago. The bank told me foreign cards are destroyed immediately. Cancel as soon as possible. Chile is very card-friendly in cities, but you’ll need pesos for buses, small restaurants, and markets. Safer ATMs are in malls like Costanera Center or inside branches during open hours.
Banco Internacional ATM worked fine for me. Smooth process. I did hear someone else losing their card, but usually bank staff is helpful - just use one inside or near a branch and they will help
ITAU ATM did exactly what it was supposed to. Smooth transaction.
Standard ATM experience at B. Security. Worked fine. Took my card but thankfully I was in banking hours so showed them my ID and they retrived it for me. Languager isa bit of an issue though so use a translator for spanish if you don t know how to speak it
