On a budget and looking for free ATMs in Costa Rica - Any top banks?
During my trip I tried ATMs from Scotiabank, Lafise, and small supermarket machines. Everyone charged a fee - some as high as nearly 8 USD per withdrawal. Banco de Costa Rica and Banco Nacional never charged me extra, while BAC Credomatic was always expensive at 7.8$. My advice is to go for Banco Nacional, BCR. If not possible, then go for Banco Popular it has the lowest fee of $4. I Skip convenience store ATMs unless it’s an emergency
I was curious about withdrawal limits so I checked a BCR ATM in Liberia. It gives you withdrawals of up to 500 000 colones each per day. I usually combined that with a single ATM that allowed larger amounts later once a day. Davividena also allows like 500,000 colones in 1 teansaction. Popular was the lowest at like 100,000 colones and charged $4.
I live here and regularly use BAC Credomatic ATMs with my foreign debit card. Fees are around $7.8 USD each time, and I usually can withdraw multiple times a day up to about $1800 USD total before hitting daily card limits. That fee can add up fast so I fill one larger withdrawal in the morning. For fee-free options I always look for Banco de Costa Rica or Banco Nacional. Banco Popular machines instead charge like $4 and Davivienda charges like $10 per trnsactio!
I used my Schwab debit card in San José and Monteverde and found Banco Nacional ATMs had no local fees. I could withdraw up to about 200 000 colones (roughly $600 USD) per transaction, and the ATM didn’t tack on any extra fee. My home bank reimbursed any tiny international charges so I ended up paying nothing. Other machines, especially those at convenience stores or resorts, had a flat surcharge of 1500 to 3000 colones per withdrawal, so I steered clear of those
Banco BAC in Costa Rica dispensed both Colones and USD. Safe location and reliable machine.
Excellent condition-Davivienda ATMs were clean and well maintained.
Surprised Davivienda had no USD available. Only CRC offered.
Davivienda ATM fulfilled its purpose. No frills.
