Looking for reliable ATMs in US Virgin Islands that work well with foreign debit/credit cards and dont charge crazy fees. Any recos will be highly appreciated.
Living here since January, and I always recommend visitors stick to Banco Popular, FirstBank, or Scotiabank - they’re the most reliable for international cards. The ATMs at Buccaneer Mall and Havensight Mall consistently work with Visa and Mastercard. Limits vary - most allow $300-$500 per transaction. I avoid gas station ATMs or those attached to souvenir shops - they frequently glitch or charge outrageous markups.
In St. John, I used the FirstBank ATM near Mongoose Junction and had no problems withdrawing $300 using my Australian debit card. It charged a $4 fee, which was lower than other options I saw. The Banco Popular branch in Cruz Bay was also recommended by my Airbnb host - felt safe, well-lit, and didn’t glitch like some of the random hotel lobby ATMs. If you’re staying a while, take out the max per transaction and avoid repeat charges.
Avoid the no-name ATMs near beaches or ferry terminals - they either don’t work with foreign cards or charge up to $7 per withdrawal. I had the best luck with Scotiabank ATMs in Christiansted, St. Croix - no issues with my UK Revolut card and fees were around $3. Withdrawal cap was $400. FirstBank in Frederiksted worked too, but only during business hours. Most important tip: reject any "conversion to EUR" prompt if it shows up.
I’ve been using ATMs around Charlotte Amalie and Red Hook in St. Thomas. The best experience so far has been with Banco Popular - my Wise card worked smoothly, no hidden fees, and I could withdraw up to $500 per transaction. Their machines are well-maintained and located in decent areas. FirstBank is another solid option, but they usually limit withdrawals to $300. I avoid any standalone ATMs in touristy zones like Yacht Haven Grande - fees were ridiculous, and one machine tried pushing dynamic conversion in EUR.
