Is it safe to withdraw cash in US Virgin Islands or not?
I traveled between islands and found ATM coverage decent but not always consistent. If you’re withdrawing after 8 PM, stick to machines in populated areas or near hotels. The islands feel safe, but even here, petty theft can happen if you’re not aware of your surroundings.
My hotel staff in Red Hook told me to avoid the freestanding ATM near the ferry terminal after dark. It’s in a quiet spot and has no surveillance. They suggested using the one inside Moe’s grocery instead - more foot traffic and security lights.
On St. Croix, I used a FirstBank ATM inside a 24-hour gas station. The machine worked fine with my debit card, and there were staff and cameras around. I felt comfortable withdrawing at night, but I’d still avoid using machines in deserted residential areas.
I withdrew dollars from a Banco Popular ATM in Charlotte Amalie (St. Thomas) after dinner around 10 PM. The ATM was well-lit and next to a row of shops still closing up. ATM safety at night in the US Virgin Islands felt comparable to a small US town - reasonably safe in tourist zones, but caution still applies.
