Is it safe to withdraw cash in Trinidad and Tobago or not?
T&T has a decent number of working ATMs, but security varies. I was advised by my hotel to use the one inside Trincity Mall before 9 PM. Police presence there made it feel safe. Always check if there’s a camera or security nearby - some areas get quiet fast after dark.
I stayed near San Fernando and needed cash for a taxi. The only nearby ATM was in a petrol station with minimal lighting. I went during the day the next time. In Trinidad, avoid stand-alone ATMs at night unless absolutely necessary - use machines inside malls or supermarkets.
In Tobago, I withdrew cash from a First Citizens ATM outside a small supermarket in Crown Point. It was around 8 PM and there were tourists around, so I didn’t feel unsafe. The machine worked well with my Mastercard. That said, a few guesthouse owners warned me about occasional card skimming incidents - especially at unmonitored machines.
I was in Port of Spain and used a Republic Bank ATM on Ariapita Avenue around 9:30 PM. The street still had music and food stalls open, and the area felt active. ATM safety at night in Trinidad depends on the location - busy zones like Woodbrook are generally okay, but isolated ATMs should be avoided. Locals often say to “watch your surroundings” and trust your gut. I kept my wallet hidden, made my withdrawal quickly, and didn’t linger.
