Is it safe to withdraw cash in Mexico or not?
I tried using an ATM in Mérida one night after dinner and found the machine out of service. Walked two blocks to another one and felt a little uneasy - no one around and no security. Decided to leave it for the next morning. If you absolutely need cash at night, go to one that’s attached to a bank with cameras and a guard if possible. I also keep a small emergency stash of pesos just to avoid these situations.
I used my debit card at a Banorte ATM late one evening in Guadalajara. There were three people ahead of me so I felt safe enough but I still kept my withdrawal small and checked the card slot for any signs of tampering. I’d say if it’s inside a 24-hour OXXO or inside a mall, it’s okay but avoid lonely street corners. Mexico is beautiful but like anywhere, stay alert after dark.
Used an ATM around 10 pm in Tulum right outside a supermarket. No one around but it was brightly lit and I kept my phone flashlight on for extra visibility. Nothing happened but I won’t do it again. My travel insurance rep even told me night withdrawals increase fraud risk. I now only use ATMs inside bank branches or big grocery stores during regular hours. Way less stress.
I’ve travelled across Mexico for a couple of months now and my rule is simple - never use outdoor ATMs after dark. Even in well-lit areas like Condesa in Mexico City or near ADO stations, I prefer to wait until morning. It’s not just about theft. Some standalone machines act glitchy at night and I don’t want to deal with a swallowed card when no staff are around. Daytime always feels safer and more reliable.
20 people in line at BBVA in CDMX Benito Juarez. Prepare for a wait. So try to use it in the day not night
Look for the red sign-easy to spot Santander. Id recommend using the one inside. Safer
Fast service and felt safe using the Inbursa ATM. But in general in mexico I don t advise using ATMs at night, it is not safe
ATM in CDMXs Zona Rosa was broken and in a sketchy area. Wouldnt recommend.
