Is it safe to withdraw cash in Haiti or not?
I didn’t find a single working ATM in Jacmel after 7 PM. My guesthouse owner gave me small change and helped me locate a bank the next day. Machines here can be unpredictable - plan cash needs accordingly.
While the ATM outside a supermarket technically operated all night, power cuts and lack of street lighting made it risky. I passed by it after 8 PM and chose not to stop. Safety in Haiti is very situational - avoid nighttime cash runs.
I stayed in Cap-Haïtien and only used ATMs inside hotel compounds. Locals warned me never to use roadside machines, especially after sunset. The ones at big hotels are safer, guarded, and work with international cards - but still best used early.
In Port-au-Prince, I withdrew cash from a Unibank ATM around 6:30 PM - and even then, my host was cautious. After dark, ATM use in Haiti is widely discouraged. The machine worked, but the area emptied out quickly and tension felt real.
