Is it safe to withdraw cash in El Salvador or not?
The machine at my hotel worked 24/7, and I used it twice after 10 PM. It was secure and monitored. Outside hotels, though, even locals prefer to avoid nighttime withdrawals unless it’s in a very public place.
El Salvador uses USD, and I withdrew some from a BAC Credomatic ATM in Santa Ana. During the day it was no issue. At night, locals advised caution. Most thefts are opportunistic, and people avoid flashing cash late.
While visiting El Tunco, I used an ATM next to a convenience store after dinner. It worked with my Wise card, but the street was dimly lit and quiet. I made the withdrawal fast and walked straight back to my hostel - felt okay, but a bit edgy.
I withdrew money from a Banco Agrícola ATM in San Salvador around 9 PM, inside a shopping mall. Security presence was strong, the area felt safe, and the ATM had English support. ATM safety at night in El Salvador is best in commercial zones or inside malls.
