Is it safe to withdraw cash in Dominica or not?
There aren’t many ATMs on the island, so you’ve got to plan. I made a nighttime withdrawal once and it worked - but the power flickered and it stressed me out. I’d say stick to daytime unless you’re near a hotel or police-patrolled area.
I withdrew Eastern Caribbean dollars from an ATM outside a supermarket in Roseau just before 8 PM. The area was still mildly active, and I felt fine, but it’s true most Dominicans do their banking early. Not a late-night ATM culture.
I tried using a Republic Bank ATM in Portsmouth after dark, but it was shut. Locals said some banks disable their machines at night due to power fluctuation risks. I ended up withdrawing early the next day instead.
In Roseau, I used a National Bank of Dominica ATM after 9 PM near the waterfront. The area had light traffic and wasn’t deserted, but the machine was in a low-lit corner. It worked fine, but I didn’t linger. ATM safety in Dominica at night depends on the street - busier areas are better.
