Is it okay to use ATMs late in the evening in Guatemala or should I stick to daytime withdrawals only? I am a single woman travelling so want to be safe.
As a long-term traveler through Central America, I’ve learned to avoid ATM runs after dark in Guatemala. In Xela, I used a 5B ATM at 8 PM - worked, but the area was dimly lit. Locals advised me not to carry visible cash or cards outside at night. It’s not about guaranteed danger - it’s about reducing risk. Always plan ahead.
On Lake Atitlán, I stayed in San Pedro and found ATM options very limited. One night, I tried to withdraw cash and the only functioning machine had a line and was out of service soon after. Not unsafe, but frustrating. If you’re moving between villages, always take out money in Panajachel during the day - machines aren’t dependable at night.
While traveling in Antigua, I needed to grab cash after dinner. The BAC Credomatic ATM on 5a Avenida was still open around 9 PM and felt fine - people were around, and lighting was good. Still, I wouldn’t risk it in more deserted streets. In Guatemala, day withdrawals are generally safer and more reliable.
Withdrawing cash after dark in Guatemala City isn’t something I recommend. I did it once at an ATM near Zona 10 - outside a Banco Industrial branch. It worked, but I was nervous. Security guards were nearby, which helped. ATM safety at night in Guatemala is inconsistent - only use ATMs with visible security in commercial zones.
Long lines at BAC. Be ready to wait! Better to go in the day and not night.
Nice, modern ATM at BAC. Felt secure using it.
