Is it okay to use ATMs late in the evening in Costa Rica or should I stick to daytime withdrawals only? I am a single woman travelling so want to be safe.
Used ATMs in the evenings a few times while travelling solo around Costa Rica but I always made sure I wasn’t alone. One time in Puerto Viejo I went with a group from the hostel just to play it safe. The BAC Credomatic machines there are quite reliable and I never had any technical issues but I wouldn’t go to one alone at night especially if it’s a secluded location. During the day felt much safer and less stressful.
I’ve lived in Costa Rica for over a year and I’d advise you to always withdraw cash from machines that are either inside malls or inside actual bank lobbies. Many ATMs in tourist areas like San José or Tamarindo operate 24 hours but the issue is not the machine, it’s the surroundings. Late night can mean fewer people around and more opportunity for petty theft. If you need cash urgently, use one that’s under camera surveillance or has a guard on duty.
I travelled solo through Costa Rica earlier this year and my general rule was to withdraw cash during the day. I did use an ATM around 9 pm once in Santa Elena near Monteverde but it was inside a Banco Nacional branch with a security guard at the door. That felt safe. I’d say avoid standalone ATMs at night especially those near convenience stores or gas stations. Even if it’s well-lit, I preferred the peace of mind of daytime use.
