Is it okay to use ATMs late in the evening in British Virgin Islands or should I stick to daytime withdrawals only? I am a single woman travelling so want to be safe.
Backpacking the Virgin Islands on a shoestring was tricky - most places want cash. I did use an ATM in Spanish Town on Virgin Gorda around 8 PM. Nothing unsafe happened, but it was dead quiet. I wouldn’t call it dangerous, just inconvenient. Best to pull cash before nightfall. Also, always carry a backup - cards don’t always work.
Used the Republic Bank ATM near Wickham’s Cay after a late dinner. Well-lit, open, and still had activity around. British Virgin Islands felt safer than many Caribbean islands in that regard. I’m a digital nomad, so reliable ATM access matters. If you need to withdraw late, stick to town centers and near ferry docks or large hotels.
I was staying in Cane Garden Bay and made the mistake of not carrying enough cash for a food truck festival. Drove into town to use an ATM around 10 PM - streets were dark and deserted. The machine worked, but it wasn’t the most comfortable experience. BVI is safe, but isolated ATMs after dark aren’t ideal if you’re solo.
Working remotely from Road Town, I used a FirstBank ATM next to the ferry terminal around 9:30 PM - totally fine. There were still people out and some shops open. If you're wondering about ATM safety at night in the British Virgin Islands, you’re generally okay in urban areas. That said, I wouldn’t go hunting for ATMs late in the hills or less populated zones.
