Is it okay to use ATMs late in the evening in Bermuda or should I stick to daytime withdrawals only? I am a single woman travelling so want to be safe.
Stayed in a budget guesthouse in Paget Parish and rode a scooter into Hamilton a couple of nights for late dinners. I withdrew from an ATM near Front Street after 10 PM and never had issues. Bermuda has a very low crime rate. Just be smart - use ATMs in lit, populated spots. Avoid random standalone ones in rural areas after dark.
I backpacked through a few Atlantic islands and Bermuda felt super safe. I used an HSBC ATM at L.F. Wade International Airport just before midnight and it worked fine. The island’s infrastructure is solid, and I never felt at risk pulling cash late. That said, smaller towns go to sleep early, so if you’re staying in Somerset Village or similar, do it during the day.
As a solo traveler staying near St. George’s, I did use an ATM at night once, near a gas station - not unsafe, just really quiet. I felt fine but wouldn’t repeat it, mostly because the area was deserted. Better to do withdrawals during the day in more central areas like Hamilton. Machines at banks like HSBC or Butterfield are most reliable.
I was working remotely from Hamilton and often withdrew cash from the Butterfield Bank ATM on Reid Street late at night - around 10 or 11 PM. Bermuda is one of the safest islands I’ve visited. Streets are calm, and there’s often security near ATMs in central areas. If you're worried about ATM safety at night in Bermuda, you really don’t need to be - just avoid withdrawing in isolated parts of the island.
