The ATM just swallowed my debit card and didnt return it. This was in Trinidad and Tobago, close to where Im staying. Any idea if local banks can help? Help SOS how to get it back

My US debit card got swallowed by a Republic Bank ATM in central POS last month. Went into the branch with ID, but they said they discard international cards routinely. They offered me a printed incident report “if needed” for my bank. I blocked it via my app and ordered a replacement. Best advice? Have a second card, keep the receipt, and request a replacement card be shipped to your accommodation or pick up later.

This happened to me at a Scotiabank ATM near the Queen’s Park Savannah. When I went in the next morning, staff said they’d found it during their cleaning, but per policy, foreign cards are destroyed, not returned. They offered to put a note on file for me to claim a new card but that didn’t happen. I just got a temporary card from home. So yes - if the ATM eats it, check next morning, but don’t expect to get it back.

My debit card disappeared into a First Citizens ATM near my Airbnb in Woodbrook - no beep, no exit, it just vanished. I went inside and spoke with a teller who checked the ATM bin but said they’re required to destroy non-local cards for security. I had to get a replacement shipped from home and survived on cash. Your best bet: block the card, use a backup, or ask your bank to expedite a delivery.

This happened to me outside a Republic Bank branch in Port of Spain. The ATM ate my debit card after I forgot to take it. I rushed to the branch, showed them my passport and ATM receipt, but they told me foreign cards are usually shredded overnight and not returned. They advised calling my bank/book a courier replacement. If this happens, immediately block your card, then contact your bank for a quick replacement - don’t expect the bank in Trinidad to give it back.
