The ATM just swallowed my debit card and didnt return it. This was in Mexico, close to where Im staying. Any idea if local banks can help? Help SOS how to get it back
When my debit card got stuck in a Scotiabank ATM in Mérida, I was sure it was gone forever. But the security guard told me the bank collects retained cards daily. I went back the next morning, explained everything, and showed my ID. They confirmed the card was recovered and handed it to me in an envelope. Not all banks will return foreign cards, but it’s worth a try. Always get the exact time and location ready when you explain.
This exact thing happened to me last week in Mexico City. I used a Inbursa machine and it just kept the card with no message or receipt. I walked into the bank next door and they asked for my passport and details of when the card was taken. They couldn’t give it back right away but asked me to return the next day. When I did, they had it. So yes, local banks can help but timing is key. Go as soon as they open and stay calm. Heard this happen on occasion at Azteca and Bancoppel ATMs also.

Sorry that happened to you. First thing is to freeze the card using your app if possible so no one misuses it. Then check if the ATM belongs to a major bank like Banorte or BBVA and visit the nearest branch in person. They’ll usually open the machine the next business day and can return the card if you show ID. If the machine was privately owned or inside a convenience store, recovery is harder. In that case, cancel it and ask your bank to ship a replacement to your hotel.
That happened to me in Puebla and I totally panicked. It was a Santander ATM outside a pharmacy. I went to the nearest Santander branch the next morning with my passport and explained what happened. They were super helpful and found the card inside the machine. It took about 30 minutes but they handed it back after verifying my ID. If the ATM was attached to a bank branch, go there right away. If it was standalone, you might need to contact your bank and cancel the card. Similar thing happened to a friend at banorte but it was inside a supermarket so no way to do anything, just cancelled the card and ordered a new one.
