My card was taken by an ATM near my hotel in United States. Has this happened to anyone else? Solution?
Yeah I had a similar issue in Chicago while trying to withdraw cash using my Dutch ING card at a US Bank ATM downtown. I had just come from Millennium Park and the machine looked legit but it froze after I entered the amount and then shut down. It held my card and rebooted. I waited 10 minutes nothing. I went into the US Bank branch and they told me the machine was outsourced and they had no way to open it. I had to block my card using the ING app and have a replacement sent to my hostel in Denver. It took three days. Now I avoid those isolated machines and I only use ATMs inside big hotels or airports if needed
It actually happened to me in Miami two weeks ago and it was stressful. I was staying at Generator Hostel near South Beach and used an outdoor ATM attached to a Chase Bank. I inserted my Visa debit card from ANZ Australia and the transaction timed out and then the card didn’t come back. I went into the bank and they said even though the ATM was on their wall it was serviced by a third party. I had to call a number printed on the machine and they said they’d send the card back in 5 to 7 business days but I was flying out before that. I cancelled the card and relied on Apple Pay after that. Best advice always have more than one card and never wait till you are low on cash
Damn sorry man. Yes this happened to me too in May in New York City outside a CVS in Lower Manhattan. I tried using my Santander UK card at a generic ATM and it just kept the card after a failed PIN attempt. I think it was due to my bank’s fraud filter but the ATM definitely did not return the card. Luckily I had my Monzo card as a backup. The ATM was labeled with the Euronet name and after Googling it I realized they’re known for these issues. I would say avoid using Euronet or Allpoint ATMs and stick to branded ones like Wells Fargo or CitiBank. Also use contactless tap wherever possible to avoid inserting the card altogether
Happened to me in Los Angeles last month near my hostel in Koreatown. I used a Scotiabank debit card from Canada at a Cardtronics ATM inside a 7-Eleven and the machine just swallowed it after a short delay. There was no error message and no cash came out. The store staff said they couldn’t do anything and that the machine gets serviced once a week. I ended up calling the number on the ATM but they only logged a report and couldn’t recover the card. I had to block it through my bank and used my backup Visa credit card for the rest of the trip. Now I never use standalone ATMs only ones inside Bank of America or Chase branches
