Here’s what worked for me in Ankara:

  1. Take a photo of the ATM showing its location and ID number

  2. Call 0850 222 0 000 for Ziraat Bank or 444 0 234 for Halkbank (or find your ATM’s bank hotline)

  3. Explain the situation calmly - they’ll ask for card details and ID

  4. If they can’t retrieve it, have your bank courier a new card to your hotel

Which bank’s ATM was it? If it belongs to a major bank like Akbank, İş Bank, or Yapı Kredi, go into the branch when they open with your passport. The staff can often open the machine and return your card if it hasn’t been shredded yet. For standalone ATMs (like Euronet), you’re probably out of luck as those get serviced by third parties weekly.

This happened to me at a Garanti BBVA ATM in Istanbul last month. Do not walk away. Immediately call the bank’s customer service number posted on the ATM. For Garanti, they retrieved my card within 24 hours because the machine logs all transactions. If it’s after hours, contact your home bank to block the card first to prevent fraud.

ING ATM in Turkey ate my card. The shopkeeper nearby said this happens often at that location. Definitely be cautious.
