I was backpacking solo and mostly used my card, but still carried about 50 euros in small bills each day. It helped for public toilets, tips, and the occasional boulangerie that had a card minimum. A few metro stations in Paris had broken card machines so I was glad I had coins ready.

My partner and I kept around 150 euros between us daily for cash expenses. We’d take out 300 to 500 euros at a time to minimize ATM fees and split it up in different spots in our bags. That covered meals, metro tickets, coffees, museum tips, and the odd cash-only restaurant.

In smaller towns and rural areas like Provence or Normandy, I found cash more useful. A few bakeries, farmers markets, and local buses didn’t accept card at all. I carried around 80 euros per day and rarely needed more than that unless I was booking something like a tour or had a cash-only B&B.

I usually carried about 60 to 100 euros in cash per day when traveling around France. In big cities like Paris or Lyon, most places take card, including small cafes and bakeries, but I still kept cash for tips, small shops, or older spots that don’t accept cards. I used my card for hotels, restaurants, and transport passes, but kept some cash just in case.
