Trying to find out if the UK widely accepts Amex cards in restaurants and shops and ATMs - any suggestions

Amex acceptance is growing but still spotty:

London: Pretty good (60-70% of places).

Small towns: Maybe 30-40%.

Tourist traps: Often take Amex (they know travelers have it).
Biggest issue? Some machines technically accept Amex, but staff think they don’t, so always insist they try!

I rely on my Amex Platinum for rewards, but in the UK:

Restaurants: 50/50 chance-always ask before ordering.

Shops: Big retailers (John Lewis, Primark) = yes. Market stalls = no.

ATMs: Possible, but cash advance fees (3%+) and interest kick in immediately never use Amex for withdrawals!
Solution: Pair it with a no-FTF Visa/Mastercard (Chase Sapphire, Revolut) as a backup.

If you’re using Amex in the UK it works well at: Hotels (Hilton, Marriott), Chain restaurants (Wagamama, PizzaExpress), Supermarkets (Waitrose, Co-op), But often rejected at Independent cafes, Small corner shops, Public transport (Tube/buses require contactless Visa/MC).
Pro tip: Link Amex to Apple/Google Pay - some terminals accept it even if the shop "doesn’t take Amex."

Amex is accepted in most big chains (Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Boots, M&S) and high-end restaurants, but smaller shops and pubs often refuse it due to higher merchant fees. I’d say 70% of places take it in London, but outside cities, carry a backup Visa/Mastercard. ATMs? Yes, but you’ll get cash advances (with fees) - better to use a debit card for withdrawals.
