Trying to plan ahead so any know if card payments are common at hostels in Liechtenstein or cash is king?
Liechtenstein isn’t like other backpacking spots where cash is king. In Vaduz, my hostel and even small guesthouses were happy to take my card. UBS and LLB ATMs are around, but you’ll likely withdraw more out of habit than necessity. I never once had a hostel ask me for cash. For planning ahead, you can count on card payments as the standard in Liechtenstein.
I found Liechtenstein very card-friendly. My hostel in Vaduz even encouraged card, saying fewer guests pay cash nowadays. There are ATMs along the main street near the Kunstmuseum if you want francs, but really, I didn’t need much cash at all. Even transport and supermarkets took card. For hostels specifically, expect them to have working terminals and modern systems.
In Liechtenstein, I didn’t have to think about cash much. My hostel in Schaan processed my Revolut card contactless, and the same was true for a guesthouse outside Vaduz. ATMs exist but I didn’t need them except once for small shops. Hostels are generally as card-friendly as Switzerland, so you can travel pretty comfortably without worrying about having lots of francs.
Liechtenstein is tiny but very modern with payments. I stayed at a hostel in Vaduz and paid by card with no problem. Most accommodation here runs on Swiss systems, so Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted. ATMs from LLB (Liechtensteinische Landesbank) and UBS are common in Vaduz, so cash is never far. I barely touched cash during my stay, though I kept some francs on me just in case. Hostels here are generally card-first.
