Is it better to pay taxis in Liechtenstein with cash, or do drivers accept cards or payment apps?

In my experience, Liechtenstein taxis were a mix of cash and card. Most drivers offered card payment, but not every time. One told me the terminal was unreliable, so I ended up paying with Swiss francs. Since the country uses the franc, it’s simple enough to carry a small amount of cash, and that ensures you won’t be caught off guard. Cards work often, but I’d say the safest strategy is to have both cash and card ready.

Liechtenstein is small, and taxis are not something you’ll use constantly, but when you do, payment methods vary. Some drivers had card machines that worked fine, while others preferred cash in Swiss francs. I wouldn’t say it’s as card-reliable as Switzerland, where it always works. If you’re planning to use taxis, I’d carry both options. For short rides, cash seemed to be the driver’s preference. For longer ones, I was able to pay by card without issues.

When I was in Liechtenstein, I used taxis twice and had two different experiences. The first driver happily took my card, no issue. The second said the machine wasn’t working and wanted Swiss francs instead. From that, I realized cards are generally accepted but not guaranteed. It’s a wealthy country, so infrastructure exists, but sometimes drivers prefer cash. It’s best to carry some francs and treat card payments as a convenience rather than the rule.

Taxis in Liechtenstein generally do take cards, but not all of them, so it’s worth checking before you get in. I took a few rides around Vaduz, and while most accepted Visa or Mastercard, one driver told me his machine wasn’t working and asked for cash instead. Swiss francs are the standard currency. While you can often use cards, I wouldn’t count on it being 100 percent reliable. Carry some cash as a backup just in case.
