Is it better to pay taxis in Faroe Islands with cash, or do drivers accept cards or payment apps?

My experience with taxis in the Faroe Islands was generally positive when it came to cards. I paid with Visa on multiple occasions, and the drivers had no problem processing it. However, a friend of mine had one instance where the machine didn’t work due to connectivity issues, so cash saved the day. That seems to be the pattern-cards usually work, but not always. If you’re visiting, have a mix of both. It makes travelling across the islands much easier.

I found taxis in the Faroe Islands mostly card-friendly, but I wouldn’t call it guaranteed. In Tórshavn, all the drivers I used took Visa or Mastercard. But when I traveled outside the main town, one driver told me his terminal wasn’t working because of patchy signal. Luckily, I had some cash on hand. I’d recommend carrying both cards and a small amount of cash so you’re covered no matter what. In most cases, you’ll be fine using cards.

During my trip to the Faroe Islands, I paid for a couple of taxi rides with a card and it worked perfectly. Still, one driver suggested I use cash instead because his terminal sometimes lost signal in rural areas. Since the islands are small and remote in places, I’d say it’s smart to have some cash in krona, especially outside Tórshavn. Overall, cards are accepted much more often than not, but it isn’t 100% reliable in every corner of the islands.

The Faroe Islands are surprisingly modern with payments, and many taxis accept cards. I used one in Tórshavn and paid with Visa without any issues. That said, a couple of drivers told me they preferred cash for shorter rides, probably because of fees. My advice is to carry some Faroese krona just in case, but cards generally work fine. It’s also worth noting that ride-hailing apps aren’t really used there, so you’ll mostly be relying on traditional taxis.
