Trying to figure out if buses and metros in San Marino take cards or if Ill need small cash. Any recent experiences?
Thought I could just tap my card like I do on buses back home - nope. Paid the driver €5-something in cash for the ride from Rimini. Saw a few tourists scrambling for coins, so I was lucky I had change from the café. Inside San Marino, I didn’t even need transport - everything’s close. But yeah, for the one bus you’ll likely take, cash is the only way. Bring coins or small notes and you’re golden.
Used the Rimini-San Marino bus - definitely cash. Driver gave me a weird look when I asked about card. It was like €5.50 one way and they prefer exact change if possible. No apps, no terminals, just hand over the cash and grab the ticket. Didn’t see any metro or local bus inside San Marino itself, just that one main cross-border route.
There’s no metro system here - San Marino’s tiny. Only transport I used was the bus from Italy and one short shuttle in town. Both were cash-only, no online ticket, no card reader. I asked at the station and the guy just pointed at the fare chart and said “cash.” So yeah, carry small euros if you’re moving around. Don’t rely on apps - they’re not really set up for that here.
Took the bus from Rimini train station - had to pay in cash directly to the driver. No option to use card or contactless. I’d recommend getting euros ahead of time, especially small notes and coins. Within San Marino, it’s mostly walkable, so public transport inside is minimal. No metro or tap systems like in bigger cities. Just keep some coins on you and you’re good.
