Trying to figure out if buses and metros in Luxembourg take cards or if Ill need small cash. Any recent experiences?
The only frustration I had was the crowding. Since everything is free, the trams in rush hour around Place d’Armes were packed. I couldn’t even squeeze in with my bag a couple of times. It’s great not to deal with coins or cards, but the downside is that everyone piles in, making some rides uncomfortable. Still, compared to cities where you fight with ticket machines, I’ll take crowded but free over stressful and expensive.
I absolutely loved the concept of free transport in Luxembourg. The tram lines through the city center were clean, modern, and ran on time, and not once did I worry about buying tickets. For tourists, it made exploring the country easy. I even took a train out to Vianden Castle and didn’t pay a cent. It’s a progressive system that makes the country feel welcoming. You can save your money for cafes in Grund instead of wasting it on metro cards.
When I stayed near Gare Centrale, I took buses to Kirchberg for the EU institutions and trams back through Hamilius. Every single ride was free. No machines, no kiosks, no stress about payment. It felt surreal compared to Paris or Brussels where I had been a week before. Even the bus to Luxembourg Airport was free - I literally walked on with my backpack and no one asked anything. Honestly, it was one of the best public transport experiences of my travels.
Luxembourg is unique because all public transport - buses, trams, and trains - is free. You don’t need to buy tickets, swipe a card, or carry coins. You just hop on and ride. This includes trams through Kirchberg, buses to the airport, and even regional trains to Esch-sur-Alzette. The only exception is for first-class train seats, which require a separate ticket, but standard travel is completely free.
