The only problem came when my Strætó app glitched. I couldn’t buy a ticket before boarding, and the driver wouldn’t let me pay cash. I had to walk back to my hostel, which was pretty frustrating in the cold. There were paper tickets at some shops, but not everywhere, and it wasn’t clear where to find them. So while the app is convenient, it feels risky if you can’t get it working on the spot.

I loved how digital the bus system was. The Strætó app felt modern and efficient, and I never had to think about carrying change or paper tickets. I bought my passes in advance and just flashed my phone when boarding. For trips outside Reykjavik, like to Akureyri, the online booking system also took my card. It felt seamless and very in line with Iceland’s reputation for being tech-forward.

I stayed in Reykjavik’s Hlemmur area and tried to pay the driver with coins my first day, but he politely refused. He told me everything runs through the app. I downloaded it, entered my Mastercard, and bought a 24-hour pass right on my phone. After that, getting around was effortless. I did miss the simplicity of handing over a coin, but overall it worked fine once I switched.

Iceland has no metro, but Reykjavik’s Strætó bus system is reliable. You can’t pay with cash or tap a bank card on the bus. Instead, tickets are bought through the Strætó mobile app or at certain shops. The app accepts international cards and is the easiest option for visitors. Once you have the ticket, you just show it to the driver.
